Originally a tune that was penned by John Lennon, but like many of their songs during the Beatles earlier heydays was actually credited on the album to Lennon/McCartney; go figure. The year: 1964. This would be the 12th single that the band released in the United Kingdom, and would go on later that year to actually bust through to the top of the charts and push down the Rolling Stones hit of the year, “Little Red Rooster.” Similarly, the A side of this single was penned by Lennon and the B side’s, “She’s a Woman,” was written by Paul McCartney, and would also see the light of day on the top 100 charts that year.
The guitar riff that introduces this hit Beatles tune is perhaps the most significant part of the song itself. As Lennon later on informed us, he was actually influenced to write this song after listening to a 1961 song written by Bobby Parker called, “Watch Your Step,” which featured a blazing guitar riff for the time. Another noteworthy offering is that Paul McCartney has made references to the drum lines in this song being reminiscent and influenced by Ray Charles and his tune, “What’d I Say.” But who really knows for sure.
One thing is for certain with regards to “I Feel Fine” by the Beatles—it takes you on a wild musical ride, one that is a rollercoaster of rock and roll from the start to the very finish. This song demonstrated The Beatles maturing in the recording studio and the start of a trend that would take their band to new heights of rock and roll and change the way that music was written, performed and recording forever.
